Training Testimonials
I have been working with Dr. McGee for over 3 years, and he has provided a level of mentorship and supervision that has been supportive in a number of ways and he continues to help me become the best practitioner I can be, one patient at a time.
Dr. McGee has helped me in 3 primary ways:
1. He helps me stay focused on the larger goals with a systematic approach and
the formulation of a treatment plan that is in no way algorithmic and allows for
patient input and involvement along the way. I sometimes get lost in the details of
a treatment plan and it is so helpful to step back and look at the formulation and
where the patient and I stand in relation to each other as we move towards the
patient’s goals.
2. Dr. McGee provides a wonderful blend of evidence-based medicine and clinical
experience. His ability to quickly reference journal articles, books and other
material to help inform my treatment plans is remarkable and he always
recommends reference material for me to continue to learn. At the same time,
he offers clinical recommendations based on his own experience that jibe with
some of my intuitive knowing that bolster my confidence as I grow as a
practitioner.
3. He is humble and acknowledges that we know so little about how the mind
works, creating a real sense of camaraderie that is supportive but challenging
and gets me excited about psychiatry and my career. I always leave our
supervision sessions inspired to learn more. He is open to any topic that I have
questions about, and these often lead to a topic that I didn’t even know I had
questions about. One of my concerns in practice is “you don’t know what you
don’t know”, and Dr. McGee’s mentorship brings into view some of these areas
during our conversations without my asking.
Dr. McGee has been so supportive and encouraging, and his depth of knowledge comes across in every conversation I have with him. He has a suggestion at the end of every session that provides me with a framework to work within until we meet again to
review everything from individual cases, pharmacology, psychotherapeutic interventions and approaches to psychiatry in general.
It would be an understatement to say I am lucky to have Dr. McGee as a supervisor and mentor, and I always look forward to our sessions together.

I am honored to share my heartfelt appreciation for Dr. Michael McGee, MD, as a preceptor and mentor during my training as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My preceptorship with Dr. McGee was truly an excellent and wonderful experience that far exceeded my expectations.
From the very beginning, Dr. McGee demonstrated an exceptional commitment to teaching and supporting his team members. His approach to patient care is both compassionate and thorough, setting a high standard for clinical excellence. Dr. McGee consistently encouraged me to ask questions, think critically, and develop my own clinical judgment, fostering an environment where learning was both challenging and rewarding.
One of the aspects I most appreciated was Dr. McGee’s willingness to share his vast knowledge and experience. He took the time to explain complex cases and treatment plans, making sure I understood not just the “what” but also the “why” behind each decision. His feedback was always constructive, insightful, and delivered with genuine kindness. His commitment to non-pharmacological approaches to healing and mental health wellness were refreshing. His therapeutic focus on using the Feedback Informed Treatment approach demonstrates his dedication to the highest quality assurance in care for his patients as well as monitoring real time progress in treatment.
Dr. McGee’s professionalism and dedication to his patients inspired me daily. He models respectful, patient-centered care and provides guidance that extends beyond clinical skills to include ethical decision-making and professional growth. Thanks to Dr. McGee, I feel well-prepared to deliver high-quality psychiatric care and contribute positively to my team and community.
Thank you, Dr. McGee, for your outstanding preceptorship, mentorship, and dedication. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have learned and continue to learn from you.
Kindest regards,
Mitchell B.
Recently, I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with Dr. Michael McGee, a renowned expert on addiction science, and discussed with him whether he’d be interested in educating a group of judges on the science of addiction. After having an engaging dinner with Dr. McGee, I knew I had found the right
individual to speak to our group. Dr. McGee spent two hours educating and interacting in an engaging manner through the use of humor and his extensive knowledge of addiction. I highly recommend Dr. McGee to your group.

We recently invited Dr. McGee to our workplace to teach a mental health seminar to our 40+ employees. Dr. McGee was incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming. He facilitated the conversation in a way that encouraged our employees to choose the topics and guided them through some helpful tools
to better understand their mental health wellbeing. Many of our employees were able to implement some of the suggestions Dr. McGee offered during the seminar, and we received rave reviews from our employees regarding the seminar. We were lucky to have found Dr. McGee, and we look forward to working with him in the future. We are hoping to book Dr. McGee again in the future for a “Non-Violent Communications Seminar” next year!

I really enjoyed your training on therapeutic communication and interpersonal relationships. I have worked in this field for a few years, and I am always striving to improve my communication skills with patients and coworkers. I appreciated the emphasis you placed on this being a lifelong skill that takes time to develop and that we
will make mistakes, but we can take those mistakes and learn from them. This training helped to remind me of the need to practice self-compassion and self-care, so that I can practice empathy. I think you said it best when you stated, “you’ve got to be good to be good”.
